Dolch Sight Word List

Activities:

Word Sort

  • Cut out the set of words you are planning to work with.

  • Give the cards to your reader (thinking about their age and ability- you can give just a few cards if that’s where you’re at).

  • Ask the reader to sort the words into piles.

    • Sort could consist of:

      • Beginning letter

      • Similar sound

      • More advanced students could sort by vowels or vowel sounds.

      • More advanced readers could sort by pattern of vowels and consonants

        • Six Syllable Types: VC, V, VCe, VV, Vr, C-le

        • Syllable Division Patterns: VC●CV, VC●CVe, V●CV, VC●V, V●V

Beaded String

  • Print out the list of words you plan to work with.

  • Ask your student to read each word.

  • Students put a bead on a string for every word they read correctly.

  • You can leave the string filled and have them try to beat their last amount.

    • Another idea would be to have your reader say the letters and/or sounds as they put a bead down for each one.

    • Readers can use this activity to play with syllables, vowels, sounds, or letters. (Video on my Instagram @structured_ literacy_collective.)

Word Scavenger Hunt

  • After you have worked through the words with your student, and they are close to mastery:

    • Cut out the set of words you are planning to work with.

    • Tape the words around your house without showing your student where they are (for little learners, keep the words on one floor or in just a couple rooms).

    • Readers need to find the word and then read it correctly before they can move on to the next word.
